Sri Lanka is embracing a greener future by launching its first-ever Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) Investment Plan. This forward-thinking project, supported by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and led by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is a major initiative to protect the country’s agriculture from the growing effects of climate change.
With Sri Lanka’s tropical climate, the island is feeling the brunt of extreme weather more than ever. Rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, and frequent extreme weather events are making life harder for local farmers. But through this new plan, Sri Lanka is determined to protect its agriculture and the communities who depend on it.
The CSA Investment Plan is a game-changer. Experts from around the world, alongside local specialists, are working together with the government, private sector, and even universities to find innovative solutions. The goal? To support farmers with the resources they need to adapt to climate change, boost agricultural productivity, and ensure food security for the island.
Prabath Chandrakeerthi, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, put it perfectly: "Sri Lanka’s farmers are on the frontline of the climate crisis. This plan is our way of equipping them with the tools they need to not only survive but thrive."
The plan will also unlock opportunities for youth and eco-conscious entrepreneurs to invest in climate-smart projects. As FAO Representative Vimlendra Sharan noted, “Climate change is not a distant problem—it’s here now, affecting our farmers. But with this plan, Sri Lanka’s agricultural sector can adapt and continue to flourish."
This is just the beginning! The CSA Investment Plan will continue to bring together voices from all sectors to find solutions that work for everyone, including our eco-tourism industry, which benefits from sustainable farming practices and environmental conservation.
